The following sequence is recommended but not mandatory. As always, consult your adviser before registering for classes. Note that only a select few courses are offered in the summer.

Best taken after 5505 and 5545; not offered in the summer (requires access to a school library collection)

School Library Advocacy

Not ideal for new students but can be taken any time

Introduction to Cataloging and Classification in the School Library

Not recommended in first semester or two; may require access to a library automation system (preferably school but public ok). Not offered during summer.

LSC 5522

Advanced Electronic Cataloging

Optional replacement or addition to LSC 5521, Introduction to Cataloging. Intended for experienced catalogers only, with access to an online library system. Offered only in summers.

LSC 5565

School Library Practicum

Take during or near final semester. Not offered during summer.

Prerequisites: permission of Cindy Keller; 21 credits of completed SL&IT course work; LSC 5501 (Instructional Collaboration); and LSC 5530 (School Library Advocacy).

PA Students Certified to Teach After 2011

As of January 2011, the Pennsylvania Department of Education requires all candidates for PA certification to complete four special education core courses unless certified prior to 2011. Non-Pennsylvania students must contact their own state's department of education for school library certification.

The four special education courses required for PA certification are:

  1. SPE 5501, Educating Children with Exception Learning Needs

  2. SPE 5544, Instruction High Incidence Disabilities

  3. SPE 5542, Assessment and Behavior Management

  4. SPE 5530, Diverse Cultural and Linguistic Learners
