Problems Accessing Mounties Outlook Live?

Last Updated: 9 Jan 2012

Many K-12 teachers experience difficulty accessing from a school computer their Mounties email (formerly known as Windows Live Hotmail) from the mail.live.com or outlook.com web sites. If you have a good relationship with your tech guru (or offer an enticing bribe) you could try asking permission to open your school's firewall for your classroom, office or computer. If your power of persuasion does not work, there are a few alternatives, though there are no guarantees that any of these options will work.

Option A allows you to use your own mail client (after a bit of tweaking), Option B is quick and easy but requires the use of Microsoft Outlook and a downloadable plugin, and Option C relies on beta software from Microsoft.

Alternative Options

  1. Add a new account in your preferred mail client for Mounties Outlook Live (formerly known as Windows Live Hotmail). Stand alone mail clients include Outlook, Thunderbird, Entourage, Mac Mail, Eudora, etc. (i.e. installed software on your computer, not web services like Gmail, AOL or Yahoo, which may work, but probably not). To setup your mail program to retrieve Hotmail messages follow the procedures listed below (also listed on Hotmail's Help page).

  2. Install a free Microsoft download called the Outlook Hotmail Connector. The Connector is a quick download via high-speed Internet (3.2 Mb) and takes only a few seconds to setup. Simply enter your name, Hotmail password, and preferred name to appear on emails in the wizard that pops up when you first launch Outlook after installing the Connector. After restarting Outlook it should immediately retrieve your MU Hotmail messages.

  3. Install the free Microsoft Live Mail client. Microsoft makes this download available to any PC user. Use it to retrieve messages from either Hotmail or several other web-based email programs (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, etc.).
