LSC 5500 - Intro Seminar |
New for 2010:
LSC 5520 Cataloging and Classification in an Electronic environment will be split into two separate courses. Students, working with their advisor, will select either LSC 5521, Introduction to Cataloging and Classification in the School Library or LSC 5522, Advanced Cataloging and Classification in the School Library. The two alternatives will continue to be 3-credit courses.
LSC 5505 will now be titled, Children’s and Young Adult Literature
LSC 5510 will now be titled, Technologies for School Libraries
LSC 5545 will now be titled, Access and Legal Issues in the School Library
LSC 5565, School Library Practicum, is now the sole culminating course. The one or three credit course combines the previous LSC 5564, Seminar in School Librarianship, and LSC 5562, Practicum in School Librarianship. The new course will be required not just for school library certification, but for the Masters degree as well.
-
Students who are already certified school library media specialists and have worked for at least one year as a school librarian prior to their final semester, can take the one-credit course option for LSC 5565. To pass the one credit Practicum students will complete several assignments and finalize their electronic portfolio.
-
Students without certification and/or work experience will need to complete a 100-hour field experience in a school library under the mentorship of a certified SLMS, in addition to submitting assignments and an e-portfolio. The 100-hour experience will result in the three-credit option for LSC 5565.
Additional Notes
The introductory course, LSC 5500, is the first course for all degree-seeking students. Afterwards, courses may be taken in any sequence. There are no prerequisites, with one exception: LSC 5565 (Practicum in School Librarianship) requires at least 21 credits of prior coursework.
-
Students should contact their adviser for questions about the most appropriate course sequence, or consult the Recommended Course Path.
-
These are graduate courses with all of the demands of graduate level work. We strongly recommend that you keep this in mind when selecting the number of courses you want to take each semester. Enrolling in more than one course per semester while engaged in full-time employment may be very challenging.
-
Access to courses begins 3-5 days prior to the first day of the semester and ends one week after. For exact semester dates, see MU's Academic Calendar. Note that all SL&IT summer courses last 12 weeks, from May to August.
-
Course availability is subject to sufficient enrollment (especially in Summer session).
